ISPOD BINE, sound art festival launched in 2016 in Split, Croatia, with a sharp idea to bring sound art closer to the general public, glitched to enable education and collaborations in the narrow hybrid contemporary field of sound art in and from many different perspectives. 2024 is the ninth consecutive year of production and organization of this specialized hybrid festival in Split, which has developed its audience and creates new international sound art presentations and collaborations here and now.
Although experimental music festivals have existed in the world since the 1960s, the experimental and improvisational music scene, and sound art as a hybrid type of contemporary art in Croatia is (was!) largely neglected, unlike the same scene in our neighboring countries (Slovenia, Austria) and in Europe and the world. This scene, although it has prominent representatives in Croatia, has only a few festivals in Croatia, and a single-digit number of specialized clubs, and mostly takes place on the margins of the scene and in the off programs of jazz, audio art and contemporary music festivals. Publishing, criticism and reception of this type of musical art are also small, because this art does not have a commercial note or great visibility and popularity, and national and local publications for it are insufficient for a shaped and continuous development of the scene. Therefore, we decided to launch ISPOD BINE, sound art festival in 2016, firstly to bring artists from Croatia who are engaged in this type of art closer to the general public, but also to enable the guest appearances of improv and experimental artists, and sound art from abroad in Croatia, thus encouraging collaboration between Croatian and foreign artists, musicians, producers, curators. Our main aim was to present different ways of production and presentation of sound art to the audience, and ultimately with education and master classes for anyone interested, especially the students of our Art Academy of Split, and encourage some of them to start professionally dealing with this hybrid type of art.
2024 is the ninth consecutive year of production and organization of this narrowly specialized hybrid festival in Split, which has developed its audience in these 9 years and creates new sound art professionals every year, positioning itself as one of the most significant festivals of this type of art in Croatia, the region and Europe.
