Youth Home in Split once again becomes the center of contemporary sound art with the ninth edition of the ISPOD BINE sound art festival, which will take place from November 6th to 9th. This renowned festival continues to promote innovative artistic practices by gathering sound artists from all over the world, offering a rich program that includes world premieres, residencies, workshops, exhibitions, and performances.
The festival begins on November 6th at 20h with the opening of Toni Meštrović‘s installation The Resonance of the Amphitheater’s Sound, a 14-channel spatial sound installation spread across the small and large amphitheater of the Youth Home in Split. The installation will be available for viewing every day until the end of the festival and invites interaction from both festival participants and the audience. The monumental space of the amphitheaters, with its unique acoustics, becomes a resonant instrument for this sound work, and the entire process will be recorded for further use. On the first day of the festival, at 10 pm, Valerio Tricoli will perform For Old Times Sake in the space after which the festival is named, Ispod Bine. Globally known and highly active sound artist of Sicilian origin, Tricoli uses the legendary analog device Nagra 4.2, combining its samples with real-time sound manipulation to create hybrid analog-digital soundscapes.
On November 7th, the program begins with the opening of the audio-visual installation Sudden Amplitude by Rob Mazurek, a world-renowned artist who merges experimental jazz, electronics, and visual art, referring to himself as an “abstractivist.” Through his long-standing interdisciplinary work across various parts of the world, Mazurek explores abstract forms through sound and image, creating complex multimedia works that transcend genre boundaries. His works, where sound, light, and space intertwine, open new dimensions of perception, and his contribution to this year’s festival goes beyond music, offering a comprehensive sensory experience through this installation-exhibition, which will also be available for viewing until the end of the festival. That same evening, the duo Tinymental (Bojan Krhlanko and Pavle Jovanović) will perform Inner Disposition, an electro-acoustic “comprovisation” produced last year by the organization Kontejner, followed by an experimental audio-visual performance Pitch Shifting by Grgur Savić, Sanja Star, and Richard Scott, combining live improvisation, electronics, and video art.
On Friday, November 8th, Slovenian trio Svojat (Andrej Fon, Ivo Poderžaj, and Vid Drašler) will take the stage, delivering fresh and unconventional sound through improvisation and experimentation with rich sound textures. Later that evening, the project Roj Osa meets Rob Mazurek, developed during their residency as part of the ISPOD BINE festival, will have its premiere. Roj Osa, a relatively new band formed by Nenad Sinkauz, Alen Sinkauz, and Marco Quarantotto, whose first album Azbestni krovovi (2023) garnered critical and public acclaim and presented at last year’s festival, teams up with the multidisciplinary artist Rob Mazurek, creating a unique sound adventure during their residency in Split, culminating in this premiere performance on November 8th. The producer of this outstanding artistic collaboration and mini tour is P137 Artistic Organization, in co-production with Mavena Association and the ISPOD BINE festival. The performances will also be held in Pula and Zagreb as a prelude to the 11th edition of the NO Jazz Festival.
Last day of the festival, November 9th, begins with a DJ workshop led by DJs from the Belgrade collective SUTRA. In the evening, a new band from Split’s underground scene, 65Bandits (Joško Žižić, Eugen Jeličić and Lana Beović), will perform for the first time, followed by the long-standing noise-jazz duo Brio (a project by brothers Gordan and Neven Krajačić, active since the 90s), who have consciously remained on the margins of the domestic underground scene while exploring the boundaries of composition, improvisation, sound, silence, noise, and music. The festival concludes at Kocka club with a live act by Jeronim Jandrić, a student of the Academy of Fine Arts (UMAS), and a presentation of the Belgrade experimental electronic scene by the DJs from the SUTRA collective (UBICA, Bucalo, SAUD).
In addition to exhibitions and performances, the festival offers a “sneak-peek” into the residency program from November 3rd to 8th at Beton Kino, where visitors can follow the development of the collaboration between ROJ OSA and ROB MAZUREK, a DJ workshop, and the well-known musical interlude in the lobby between performances, carefully curated by Igor Stangliczky, who is also the author of this year’s festival visual identity. This year, Incredible Bob joins as the light designer for the entire festival.
ISPOD BINE is not just a festival; over the years, it has grown into a platform that allows artists and audiences to explore new dimensions of sound together through contemporary hybrid, experimental, interdisciplinary, and participatory forms. With a rich and diverse program, international collaborations, artist residencies, and interactive workshops, the festival transcends traditional perceptions of art, creating a space for innovation and experimentation.
ISPOD BINE 2024 continues to explore and redefine the possibilities of sound art, creating an innovative platform for dialogue between artists and the audience in the heart of Split. This year’s program offers not only sound experiments but also a series of interdisciplinary collaborations that open new chapters in the world of sound art. Once again, Split confirms its place as a key point on the European sound art map, bringing together artists and enthusiasts from around the world in the creative hub of Youth Home Split.
Founders and directors of the festival are producer and curator Natasha Kadin and sound designer and media artist Hrvoje Pelicarić, who have long been supported by multidisciplinary artist Igor Stangliczky and technical director Eugen Jeličić. This year, they are joined in various hybrid production roles by Incredible Bob, Andrea Miloš, Marin Renić, Jelena Šimundić Bendić, and Doris Zalović.
Festival is organized and produced by the Mavena – 36 njezinih čuda association. Partners of this year’s ISPOD BINE festival include organizations Kontejner, P137, Platforma Doma mladih, Koalicija udruga mladih, and the Multimedia Cultural Center Split. The program is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia, the Cities of Split, Pula, and Zagreb, and the Kultura nova Foundation.
